The deep freeze of Winter has set in. For a while I was beginning to wonder. I still wonder.
The first lasting snowfall in the Pioneer Valley has always been at different times. I remember years when it was before Halloween and other years when it was after Christmas. But here it is the end of January and still no accumulation?
A few weeks ago I was walking home when I heard a familiar sound, I looked up, and saw a familiar sight. A flock of honking Canada Geese flying south in V formation. So? It was December 31'st. Don't they fly south in the Autumn? You know, like in November.
I mentioned this strange event to several others. One told me they had seen a flock of geese flying North. Another said they had seen a flock of ducks flying North.
It seems the birds don't know what to do.
As if the warmer days, lack of snow, and disoriented fowl weren't enough to perplex the mind, the oddest sight was in mid-January.
While walking on January 10'th and again on the 12'th I happened to pass a Common Dandelion in flower!
