Catkins

The year of 2006 was a year of masting. The Summer of 2007, a lot of immature acorns dropped, and 2007 was not a year of masting. This Spring, there was an abundance of catkins. Red Oak Catkins
Piles of them could be seen where the wind had blown them against road edges. Whether or not 2009 proves to be another masting year will depend on other factors it's true, but if it isn't, it won't be from a lack of male flowers during the time of pollination.
