From Pittsfield Road, the Appalachian trail enters the October Mountain State Forest. Passing through dense forests of pine, the trail goes over the summit of Bald Top Mountain and passes Finerty Pond before reaching the top of Walling Mountain. After continuing to Becket Mountain, the trail then descends to US Route 20.
