Grieve says: "used unofficially as a tonic, emetic, expectorant, etc., for scrofula, gravel, and worms." Foster and Duke say: "Uses: American Indians used leaf tea as a 'female tonic'; also for colds, coughs, fevers, bowel complaints, dysentery, stomach cramps, emetic in large doses ... Used similarly by 19th-century physicians." Hutchens lists "Common Names: Wild Hyssop, Simplers Joy, Indian Hyssop." ... "Bodily Influence: Diaphoretic, Expectorant, Emetic, Antiperiodic, Nervine, Tonic, Sudorific, Antispasmodic." ... "It is also an antidote to Poke (Phytolacca decandra)." Beyerl says: "has been used to bless, to protect, and to purify."
